Last weekend, Easter weekend, Minnesota State University, Mankato held their first annual More Than Writing Conference. Our main publishing partners, Sol Books, had a table at the bookfair, and we scheduled a reading for Dan Hendrickson (aka Henry Rifle), author of Ballistics Report. I also spoke on a panel about self publishing.
For me, the most enjoyable part of these events is seeing how other people are delving into their publishing ventures, whether self publishing or establishing an independent press, and making new connections. A couple interesting finds:
Blue Road Press—an independent press, which focuses largely on local authors. John Gaterud, Blue Road’s founder, is looking into buying a letter press and printing off individual poems which can then be framed and sold.
The Postcard Press—I thoroughly enjoyed Caitlin O’Sullivan’s venture. Her subscribers receive a postcard each month with a poem or piece of short-short fiction on it.
RockSaw Press—a small press publishing off-the-wall chapbooks, focusing on regional authors.
And below is our own Dan Hendrickson reading.
