Each year the English Department at Southern University Carbondale holds their Devil’s Kitchen Reading Series. They offer an award for best collection of poetry and one for best book of prose, for books published by independent, university, or commercial publishers in the year prior to the contest.
What I like about this contest is that one top of the honorarium, the winning authors also attend (with travel expenses provided for) the Devil’s Kitchen Fall Literary Festival. On top of the press gained for winning the contest, authors also receive a chance to promote themselves and their works by giving a reading at a well attended event.
